About

Empowering Women Through Tattoo Art

Feminine Ink is a dedicated platform that celebrates the presence, artistry, and strength of women within the tattoo community. Through intimate and candid portraiture, we highlight the diverse stories of women who use tattooing as a means of self-expression, empowerment, and identity. Our mission is to not only showcase the beauty and individuality of women in this space but also to provide a supportive and safe environment where they can connect, share their experiences, and be inspired by one another.

A Legacy of Women in Tattooing

Tattooing has long been a form of storytelling, marking rites of passage, cultural identity, and personal history. While often viewed as a male-dominated industry today, the history of female tattooing stretches back thousands of years. One of the earliest recorded examples comes from Ancient Egypt, where female mummies have been discovered with intricate tattoo patterns. Unlike their male counterparts, who rarely bore such markings, these tattoos were almost exclusively found on women. Historians suggest they may have been protective symbols, expressions of status, or even forms of early medical practices related to childbirth and fertility.

In more recent history, the Edwardian era saw a surge of tattooing among upper-class women in Britain. Secretive yet highly fashionable, tattoos became a discreet form of rebellion and personal adornment among aristocratic women. In private salons, they would receive elegant, hidden tattoos—often delicate florals, initials, or symbolic imagery—that reflected their personal journeys and independence. This historical thread ties into the modern era, where tattooing continues to serve as a powerful tool for self-expression, defying social norms and reclaiming ownership of one’s body.

Creating a Space for Women

Feminine Ink exists to honor this long-standing relationship between women and tattooing. We seek to amplify the voices and experiences of women who continue to shape and evolve the tattoo industry. Whether they are artists, collectors, or first-time tattoo recipients, our platform is a home for those who wish to celebrate their journey through ink.

By sharing intimate portraiture and real stories, we not only document this dynamic culture but also create a space where women can feel seen, understood, and empowered. Tattooing is more than just an art form—it is a declaration of identity, resilience, and beauty. Feminine Ink is here to ensure that every woman’s story is given the recognition it deserves.

At Feminine Ink, our mission is to tell the stories of women in the tattoo community — to celebrate their journeys, their creativity, and their personal connections to ink. The content shared on this platform is intended to spotlight individual experiences and artistic expression, not to serve as a form of professional accreditation or endorsement.

While we strive to represent each woman authentically and respectfully, we do not independently verify training credentials, licensing status, or health and safety practices of the artists featured. We encourage all clients and collaborators to do their own due diligence when booking or working with any tattoo artist.

Feminine Ink is a storytelling platform — not a review site, directory, or regulatory body. We are here to share voices, not to police them.

Photographer

Dannie Carter is a photographer, mother, and tattoo collector based in the beautiful landscapes of Devon. Her love affair with ink started at 17 with a hilariously questionable first tattoo—one that might not have aged well, but definitely sparked a lifelong passion. Inspired by the stories and strength of women in the tattoo community, she founded Feminine Ink—a platform dedicated to celebrating and supporting women through intimate and candid portraiture. Through her work, Dannie captures the bold, vibrant narratives of tattoo culture, championing self-expression and individuality in all its forms.

A few examples of Dannie’s own tattoos, collected from a number of artists – some of whom are featured in the gallery! (Included is the dodgy tummy tattoo – the ultimate emo emblem from 2007!) Inspired by a love of music, reading, history, TV shows, movies and personal mementos, Dannie considers her body art to be a scrapbook of memories.
